from splinter to… Splendid

Bench Makeover

Bench

This was given to me by my previous employer. We were emptying out a section of the office to rent to another business and he had to get rid of this piece along with a couple of other pieces of furniture. Of course, I jumped at the chance to get it. I have had it for a couple of years and finally decided to take it from blah to splendid. It looks so inviting at my back door now. I used Americana Decor brand chalk paint. It is cheaper than Annie Sloan but I did not like it as well. Our local hardware store got Valspar brand this week and I can’t wait to try it. The hardware store is 10 minutes from my house vs over an house to the closest Annie Sloan dealer.

I started by sanding the seat to smooth it out the rougher spots. Next I painted it with 2 coats of chalky paint, except seat. Then I carefully stained the seat with Minwax Walnut (not getting it on the paint) and let it all dry overnight. Next I “antiqued” it by sanding corners/edges all over (except stained seat part). I wiped it clean and applied Minwax on seat. I then applied 2 coats of Americana Decor wax on paint and buffed it with a rag. I used the original handles. They are rustic themed and go great with it now. I put the handles back on and now it is splendid!!!
